Self-declaration of spent or unspent convictions

The disclosure of convictions, cautions, reprimands or bindovers will not necessarily prevent employment but will be considered in the same way as DBS disclosures.

Advice should be sought from the Safeguarding team before making any final decision that would preclude the applicant from working in the post.

Unspent convictions only – all roles not requiring a DBS check

Candidates are required to declare any unspent convictions, cautions or other circumstances. They will do this as part of the online application process.

No account should be taken of spent convictions unless the post requires a DBS check.

Spent and unspent convictions – roles that require a DBS check

Candidates are required to provide information on any spent or unspent convictions, cautions, reprimands or bind-overs appropriate to the post. They will do this as part of the online application process.

Further information can be found in the trace (unsatisfactory) DBS checks guide (PDF, 61 KB).
