Digital strategy - Digital skills

The way that we work and do things has changed. Many of us expect to be able to access services online day and night, and we look for the best deals across different online sellers when buying things.  

We are designing digital services that work for everyone. Residents and employees need the necessary skills to access and make the most of them.  

What we have done  

We have:  

  • established a programme of work to make sure that no one is excluded from digital opportunities, working closely with our key partners to remove the barriers and inequalities to accessing digital services  
  • designed an easy to use and accessible tool with some of our incredible community volunteering services in Essex 
  • launched a community digital learning hub in collaboration with Digital Essex 
  • established learning hubs and pathways to support our officers 

What we are doing  

Across our workforce there are a wide range of roles and levels of digital expertise. We want our employees and all Essex residents to benefit from digital ways of working.  

We will do this by: 

  • providing a wide range of self-serve digital training for residents and employees 
  • continuing with our programme of work to remove barriers and inequalities in accessing digital services 

How we will know we are successful  

We will know we have been successful when we have: 

  • established our baseline of internal digital skills capability and set an improvement plan 
  • improved digital literacy with a wide range of self-serve digital training for residents and employees at all levels of experience 
  • built digital confidence in our residents and employees through having accessible and inclusive systems and processes 
  • specific formal and informal ‘digital leadership’ learning in place for our leaders – this will include supporting leaders to understand how to sponsor digital initiatives and how digital working can help to meet organisation ambitions 
  • introduced reverse mentoring with digitally native apprentices for our most senior leaders 
  • leveraged digital expertise and apprenticeships for people as part of the social value element of our contracts
