Bullying and harassment

Reporting and resolving concerns about bullying, harassment or stalking in the workplace.

We are committed to making the council a great working environment where everyone’s skills and diversity are valued.

We believe that every employee has the right to be treated with dignity and respect and we operate a zero-tolerance approach to bullying and harassment.

Bullying is unwanted behaviour that makes someone feel intimidated or offended.

Harassment is when the unwanted behaviour is related to one of the following:

  • age
  • disability
  • gender reassignment
  • marriage and civil partnership
  • pregnancy and maternity
  • race
  • religion or belief
  • sex
  • sexual orientation

Claims of bullying or harassment will be investigated and managed via the resolution process.

More information about identifying and dealing with bullying and harassment can be found in the Guide to addressing bullying and harassment (PDF, 200KB).

Managers can also find more information and a checklist for addressing bullying and harassment in the Allegations of bullying, harassment, sexual harassment and victimisation guide for managers and investigators (PDF, 240KB).

Stalking

Stalking is when someone feels alarmed or distressed due to unwanted and repeated behaviour that makes them feel pestered and harassed.

This can include being physically followed, being repeatedly contacted (or someone trying to make contact), or other acts against privacy such as loitering in a particular place or watching or spying on another person.

Employees who are worried about being stalked due to their role at the council can find more information in the employees guide to stalking and harassment by customers (PDF, 160KB).

Managers can find information on how to support their team in the line managers guide to stalking and harassment by customers (PDF, 170KB).
