Stalking in the workplace

Stalking is when someone feels alarmed or distressed due to unwanted and repeated behaviour that makes them feel pestered and harassed.

Examples of stalking can include:

  • being physically followed
  • being repeatedly contacted or attempting to contact a person by any means (this may be through friends, work colleagues, family or technology)
  • other acts against privacy such as loitering in a particular place or watching or spying on another person

The effect of stalking reduces a victim's freedom, leaving them feeling that they constantly have to be careful. Such conduct could appear innocent (if it is taken in isolation), but when carried out repeatedly it may cause significant alarm, harassment or distress to the victim.

If you believe you have been or are being subjected to stalking, inform your manager as soon as possible.

Next steps for managers
