Applying for Access to Work

If you have a physical or mental health condition or disability, you may be able to apply for the government's Access to Work scheme.

The support you get will depend on your needs. Through Access to Work, you can apply for a grant to help pay for practical support with your work and support with managing your mental health at work. 

  1. Employees or managers can start a discussion about reasonable adjustments.

  2. If the need for assessment is agreed, the employee should contact Access to Work.

  3. Access to Work will get in touch with you to let you know whether they think an assessment is appropriate.

  4. Following your assessment Access to Work will write a report which they will send to you and your manager.

  5. Your manager must start taking the actions recommended in the report without delay. 

  6. We must claim back the funding within nine months of the grant funding letter. 

  7. The Wellbeing team will claim the grant funding when all the support is in place. 

  8. You can usually contact Access to Work to request an assessment review every three years.

  9. If you leave the council, you maybe able to take equipment with you depending on how it has been funded.
