What happens to waste and recycling

The waste and recycling generated at County Hall is put into two 32-yard compactors located within the County Hall complex.

There is a dry mixed recyclable compactor and a general waste compactor and these are collected for disposal every 2 weeks.

Cardboard collected from the dedicated bins is also put into the mixed recycling compactor.

Dry mixed recycling

  1. The compactor is loaded onto a truck and transported to a mixed recycling facility
  2. The contents are then emptied onto conveyor belts where any non-recyclable materials are removed
  3. The dry mixed recyclables are the put through four processes to separate materials
  4. The segregated materials are then compacted into bales
  5. Bales are then transported on to companies which process the materials into new items

General waste

  1. The compactor is loaded onto a truck and transported to an sorting facility
  2. Contents are then emptied onto conveyor belts where any recyclable materials are removed and diverted to dry mixed recycling
  3. The remaining general waste is then prepared for incineration, where it is burnt and the used to generate energy

Food recycling

  1. Food waste is emptied into wheeled containers in the yard
  2. Food waste is collected and transported to a facility where it goes through a process of anaerobic digestion
  3. Food waste is then turned into biogas (to power homes) or digestate (to grow more food)

Under desk bins

To support recycling, there is a policy at County Hall for no under desk bins.

Should employees bring in their own bins, these will be removed by cleaning staff.
