If you need to drive for work you will need to make sure you are complying with the Health and Safety Executive’s (HSE) guidance on workplace transport.  

To make sure that we are fulfilling our statutory duty of care, we have guidance to help you.

Before driving you must complete a risk assessment.

If you have points on your licence 

If you have points on your licence, there are actions that must be taken depending on what your driving involves. You can find out more about what you need to do, like take a driver awareness course, in our guidance.

Mobile phones 

It is illegal to use a handheld mobile phone in a vehicle. This guidance covers the use of hands-free devices. It is for anyone who drives on council business or who manages someone who does.

Volunteers and council members 

If you are using your private vehicle behalf of the council, not including transporting service users, you must fill in a self-declaration form about your licence, MOT and other relevant documentation. 

Transporting service users 

Our guidance or minibus drivers makes sure that we are complying with our statutory duty of care as set out in regulations from HSE, the Department for Transport and the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency, as well as other insurance considerations.
