Childcare and other caring responsibilities

Includes guidance on what to do if something goes wrong with your usual child or dependent care provision.

Working from home

If you're working from home, you should not have to manage work at the same time as caring responsibilities or other distractions.

You will need to make child or dependent care arrangements as if you were going to the office or discuss your needs with your manager to see if adjustments could be made to your working pattern.

Unexpected events

If something goes wrong with your usual child or dependent care provision or your child is unable to attend school, you will need to make alternative care arrangements whilst you are working.

Sometimes, there will be no alternative and you will need to take care of your child or dependent when you would normally be working. If you are in this position, you will need to think about:

  • working from home at different times to your usual working hours
  • sharing your caring or childcare responsibilities with your partner or a family member so you can work
  • changes to your workload or projects you are working on so essential work is completed

Alternatively, there are a variety of paid and unpaid leave options that may be suitable for you.

Talk to your line manager about other flexible working options.

Discuss your needs with your line manager and book any time off on My Oracle.

Carers of adults or children with additional needs

If you need support or time away from work because of your caring responsibilities, speak to your line manager. You can complete carer's passport to help keep your line manager updated. See the support for carers page for more information and further support.
