Creating a handover plan

Handover plans should be used whenever a employee resigns, goes on leave, or hands over a project.

If you know you will be taking two weeks away from work or more, a handover plan can help you and your colleagues to manage work and deadlines.

This guidance could apply to employees who are:

  • going on long term leave, including family leave
  • taking a career break
  • a reservist called into full time service
  • leaving their current role and duties

Handing over your work

A handover plan is a good way of detailing all the relevant information in one place. Follow the guidance on how to create a handover plan (PDF, 90KB).

You and your manager should work together on this to support a smooth transition when you go on leave and for when you return from leave.
