Drugs and alcohol at work

Our policy for dealing with drugs and alcohol that can affect a person's ability to work safely.

​The use of drugs or alcohol by employees should not adversely affect their health and personal life with consequential effects on their attendance and work performance.

The drugs and alcohol at work policy (PDF, 108KB) aims to promote the health, safety and wellbeing of employees and to minimise problems at work arising from alcohol and drug misuse.

Any breach of this policy will be investigated under the council’s disciplinary policy, which may lead to disciplinary action, up to and including summary dismissal.

Advice for managers

As a Line Manager, you may at some point have to handle a situation where an employee is misusing alcohol and or drugs.
