Going to court as a witness

Take paid time off if you are summoned to attend court as a witness.

You can take paid time off if you are required to attend court as a witness, or as a claimant to the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority.

You will also receive paid leave if you are asked to attend an employment tribunal on behalf of Essex County Council, another local authority or one of our partner organisations.

As your full salary will be paid, there will be no requirement for you to claim loss of earnings from the court or tribunal.

The length of time you can get paid time off is discretionary depending on how long you are required to attend court. Speak to your manager if you expect to be away from work for a long time.

If you've been called to serve on a jury, read our information on taking time off for jury service.

Booking time off to attend court

Tell your line manager as soon as you are asked to attend court.

Once approved, you should book your time off in My Oracle under ‘public duties’. Then choose the 'court appearance' option.
