Gender reassignment and transitioning

Take reasonable time off as part of your transitioning plan.

Gender reassignment is the process of changing to a new gender identity. Transitioning is the time period during which a person begins to live according to their gender identity, rather than the gender they were thought to be at birth.

You may want to take time off for psychological support, medical or surgical procedures.

You can take reasonable time off as part of your transitioning plan. This time off will be treated in the same way as a ‘reasonable adjustment’ in law, and is comparable to other health needs.

You should book appointments outside your normal working hours or using flexible working if you can.

If this is not possible, for example if it would be difficult for you to make up the time during the working week or if you don’t have a choice of day or time, then you may be given paid time off for this.

Booking time off

Speak to your line manager as soon as you can if you need time off to attend an appointment.

Once agreed, this leave should be booked as 'medical leave' in My Oracle

More information about how your manager will support you can be found in our transgender and gender reassignment guide on the equality and diversity in employment policy and guides page.
