Reserve armed forces (reservists) duties

Taking time off for reservists training and mobilisation.

Annual training

Reservists in the armed forces are entitled to up to two weeks of paid time off to take part in an annual training event.

Once agreed, you should book your time off in My Oracle under ‘other paid leave’. Then choose the ‘public body service’ option.

If you are called up

If you are called up (mobilised), you should let your manager know as soon as possible.

You may find our guidance on taking long-term leave useful when planning your leave.

Time off for mobilisation is unpaid, but the Ministry of Defence (MOD) will provide financial support for loss of earnings and employee benefits.

Once you know the dates of your mobilisation, contact People Support on the Assyst portal to update your personnel record and make payroll arrangements.

Pension contributions

While you’re mobilised you can either:

  • keep contributing to your personal or work pension (the MOD will pay your employer’s contributions for your work pension)
  • ask for the days you’re mobilised to count towards the Armed Forces Pension Scheme

You can contact People Support on the Assyst portal to calculate the payments you and the MOD need to make for the duration of the service.

Returning to work after mobilisation

Your employment is protected during the time you are mobilised.

You can return to your job within 6 months after you are demobilised, on the same terms and conditions.

If the job no longer exists, for example if the position is made redundant, your manager will explore the options for you to return to work in a similar role and grade or you’ll be entitled to a reasonable alternative.

How we can support you
