Setting up apprenticeships for existing employees

If an existing member of employees is interested in an apprenticeship at the council, you should:

  1. Discuss training and development needs with team member who is interested in doing an apprenticeship.
  2. Identify and agree which apprenticeship could be relevant to the role. Visit the occupational maps on the Institute for Apprenticeships to explore apprenticeship routes.
  3. Contact the Learning and Development (L&D) team who will then liaise with the relevant training provider and guide you and your employee through the application process. The L&D team will also handle Apprenticeship Levy payments. Other entry requirements will depend on your function and the type and level of apprenticeship and these can be discussed with the learning provider at application.
  4. Support the apprentice with a minimum of six hours learning a week in work time (previously called 20% off-the-job).
  5. Meet with the training provider when an apprenticeship is accepted to agree arrangements and ongoing support for the apprentice.

The L&D team is there to support apprentices and managers at every stage. Contact us at ApprenticeshipQueries@essex.gov.uk
