Information for managers

Apprenticeship standards

Apprenticeship standards show what an apprentice will be doing and the skills required of them, by job role. Find a full list of apprenticeship standards on the Institute for Apprenticeships website.

Apprentices must have the support of their line manager. Work collaboratively with your direct report to agree a suitable apprenticeship route and apprenticeship standard for them and their work.

Apprenticeship Levy

The Apprenticeship Levy was initiated by the UK government in April 2017 for all employers paying a wage bill of more than £3 million (three million) per year. Employers that meet this criterion are now required to pay 0.5% of their payroll each month as a levy tax. This levy can then be reinvested back into their workforce in the form of apprenticeship training. They cannot be used to cover wages or recruitment costs. Find out more about the Apprenticeship Levy on GOV.UK.

The Learning and Development team is responsible for the administration of apprenticeship levy at the council. Your function may already have a robust apprenticeships programme but new apprenticeship standards are being added all the time.

If you would like to discuss how you can develop and grow your staff, team or function's skills and capability with fully funded learning and development using the apprenticeship levy, contact apprenticeshipqueries@essex.gov.uk
