First aid

Guidance for managers and employees on how to carry out first aid needs assessments and book first aid training.

Employers are responsible for providing adequate and appropriate equipment, facilities and people to make sure employees receive immediate attention if they are taken ill or are injured at work.

The first aid policy explains how to make sure the council has suitable and sufficient first aid provisions in the workplace and that it complies with the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981. First aid arrangements will depend on the circumstances of your workplace.

Needs assessment

Premises managers must carry out a first aid needs assessment to make sure there is always sufficient first aid equipment (first aid kit), facilities and personnel.

The needs assessment should consider the circumstances of your workplace, workforce and the hazards and risks that may be present. The findings will help you decide what first aid arrangements need to put in place. The assessment should be reviewed periodically.

List of first aiders

To contact a first aider in your work location, see the list of first aiders.

First aid training

First aid training gives staff the ability and confidence to react to an incident, injury or illness before professional medical assistance arrives.

People nominated as first aider will need to receive first aid training.

These courses are centrally funded as part of the corporate health and safety training programme.

First aid courses will be conducted at either the Adult Community Learning (ACL) centre in Brentwood or Colchester, both of which offer free car parking facilities.

To book, fill in the first aid training form.
