Overview

We are proud that Essex County Council is a White Ribbon UK accredited organisation. This demonstrates our commitment towards ending violence towards women and girls, both here at work and across the communities we support.

What we're doing

Changing attitudes and behaviours is key to transforming our workplace into one that is a safe and equal environment for all. To work towards this, we’ve developed an action plan focusing on the following core areas of:

  • strategic leadership - our leaders are committed to advocating for change, both within our organisation and in the wider community
  • raising awareness - through regular engagement, training and events, we aim to raise awareness about the importance of ending violence against women
  • engaging men and boys - we encourage all, especially men and boys, to become allies in this cause, challenging behaviour and supporting others
  • changing culture - we are cultivating an environment where respect and equality are the norms, and where everyone feels safe and valued

Our action plan, developed by our White Ribbon UK Steering Group, outlines the steps we will take over the next three years to support our employees and make a lasting change within our organisation.

Support for you

The White Ribbon UK's 'Find Help' page provides guidance and links to organisations ready to offer assistance to anyone affected by domestic abuse and gender-based violence.

Our Employee Assistance Programme offers a free helpline which provides information, advice and support, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Domestic abuse affects people regardless of gender, age, ethnicity, socio-economic status, sexual orientation or background. If you, or someone you know, is experiencing domestic abuse there are services available to offer you support.

The Southend and Thurrock Domestic Abuse Partnership list support for those affected by domestic abuse, including legal and housing advice and specialist services.

Essex COMPASS is a single point of access funded by us in partnership with the Office of Essex Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner to support those experiencing domestic abuse across Southend, Essex and Thurrock.

The National Domestic Abuse Helpline is a freephone 24-hour helpline which provides advice and support to women and can refer them to emergency accommodation.

The Men's Advice Line and Mankind are helplines for male victims of domestic abuse.
