Borrow a pool bike

How to borrow a pool bike for business trips, travelling to and from work and leisure.

Pool bikes are available from County Hall and Goodman House. These are for short-term use and can be used for:

  • business trips
  • travelling to and from work
  • leisure, such as lunch time bike rides, team days or at weekends

Book a bike

To borrow a pool bike, make sure you have read the cycling guidelines.

Then complete the booking form (DOC, 36 KB), allowing 24-hours notice where possible. Email your completed form to travelplanteam@essex.gov.uk.

Return a bike

When you return your bike, you should lock the bike in the secure compound where you collected it from. If there are any defects or damage to the bike, please let us know straight away by emailing us at travel.planteam@essex.gov.uk.

How it works

Pool bikes are loaned to employees under the following terms and conditions:

  • the bike(s) remain the property of Essex County Council (ECC)
  • use of the bike does not constitute an automatic right for continued use or extended hire periods
  • the maximum hire period for each bike is 4 weeks
  • our pool bikes are in demand and we endeavour to meet all requests, although priority will be given to those conducting business travel
  • defects or damage to bikes sustained during the hire period must be reported to the Sustainable Travel Planning Team
  • at the end of the hire period, pool bikes must be locked in the secure pool bike compound using the relevant numbered cycle stand
  • you are liable for the bike while you're borrowing it. If the bike is lost, stolen or damaged then we will seek to recoup the cost from you
  • if you leave ECC during the hire period, the bike must be returned us. Failure to do so will result in an investigation to retrieve the bike
  • ECC reserves the right to withdraw this scheme at any time
